Salt marshes cosmetics by ECLAE
What do the salt marshes of Camargue (southern France), pink flamingos and ECLAE brand beauty products have in common?
The micro-algae Dunaliella Salina!
This micro-algae thrives in extreme salt concentrations found in environments like lagoons and salt pans. It is notably abundant in France’s Salins d’Aigues-Mortes, a protected natural site of salt marshes .
Dunaliella Salina produces a beta-carotene pigment shield against UV radiation and adapts with polyunsaturated fatty acids and glycerol to survive hyper saline conditions.
The algae’ harvest takes place during the summer phytoplankton bloom. Water evaporation and salinity levels are very high and the algae’s defence process is then at its maximum. Its massive production of carotenoids colours its cell intense pink, which in turn tints the waters the same colour. This is the wonder of pink water…
This pink colour goes so far as to dye the plumage of flamingos (originally white) because they are particularly fond of micro-shrimp, which feed themselves on Dunaliella Salina!
In Roman times, Pliny the Elder already wrote about this natural phenomenon. As for the women of the region, they were renowned for the radiance and youthfulness of their skin. They borrowed their beauty secret from the salt workers, who protected their faces with this algae against the sun’s harmful effects!
Researchers only demonstrated the extraordinary antioxidant power of algae in the 19th century. But it was only in 2010 that the Salins du Midi company (European leader in salt and owner of the saltworks since 1856) decided to assess and promote this unexploited natural treasure.
In 2015, the French and organic cosmetics brand ECLAE was born !
The virtues of this Dunaliella Salina algae are remarkable:
* a decisive antioxidant action for the skin thanks to its natural carotenoids (10 times more potent than synthetic beta-carotene)
* a moisturising, emollient and protective properties thanks to its high glycerol concentration.
The skin is protected from oxidative stress, responsible for skin ageing. Its hydration and radiance are reinforced.
ECLAE brand offers a complete beauty ritual. It provides anti-ageing or wrinkle filler, hydration, soothing or radiance booster treatment.
Cosmetics ranges include daily care (day cream, night cream, eye/lip contour, serums),
targeted care (make-up remover, scrub, mask) or body and hair care (shower gel, shampoo, nourishing balm, restorative dry oil, fragrance).
A specific range (INNOSANS) is even intended to treat imperfect skin.
Formulations are not tested on animals and can have up to 99% natural ingredients. No controversial ingredients are used.
Other natural active ingredients are even harvested directly from the Aigues-Mortes saltworks (dune immortelle, sea samphire, Camargue salt, maritime chamomile or salicornia).
So do not hesitate to discover ECLAE brand with organic Camargue algae !
You can buy these cosmetics on the ECLAE website (delivery in Europe only) or in resellers’ shops.
And if you have the chance to pass through the Camargue, just visit the Aigues-Mortes saltworks and city with the dedicated boutique!

Authentic Parisian roof decoration by Toit de Paris
How would you like to take a little piece of Paris with you? An authentic object which, from its height, will have borne witness to the history of the capital?
This is what the company “Toit de Paris” offers with its extraordinary idea of recycling the zinc roofs of traditional Parisian buildings into superb decorative objects!
Zinc roofs have been one of Paris’ architectural signatures since the Haussmann works of the 19th century. Its shades of grey, which cover the capital, are known worldwide. More than 70% of Parisian roofs are made of zinc, a material chosen for its lightness and resistance to corrosion and bad weather.
France even would like to register Parisian roofs and the know-how of roofers and zinc workers on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage list!
The idea of Constance Fichet-Schulz (helped by her graphic designer mother) to recycle these roof scraps recovered during renovation work is entirely original. Inspired by the piece of the Berlin Wall that her parents gave her and faced with the current overwhelming observation of the mass production of tourist and impersonal products, she decided in 2020 to create her own unique and elegant objects.
You will have the choice between:
* The “Empreinte” series (stylized impression of the plan of Paris)
* The “Choose your arrondissement” series (stylized print of one of your choice’s 20 districts of Paris).
* The “fragments” series, a surprise piece of roof
For each of these creations, you can add initials, a short message, and a location point at the address of your choice. All are screen-printed with the GPS coordinates of the original location of the roof sheet.
Each creation is delivered with:
*a numbered certificate of authenticity whose QR code will allow you to locate the exact Parisian address of origin,
*a proof of dating of the piece of zinc.
Did you know that roofers and zinc workers inserted newspaper pages between the sheets of zinc and the still-wet concrete, avoiding waiting for it to dry? While restoring the roof, the roofers found the newspaper stuck to the old zinc sheet. These pages allow the datation of your roof from Paris.
Roofers had gradually been abandoning this tradition in favour of new ones. Each roofer signs his way on the roof he is renovating, leaving his successor a delicate touch (coin, bottle of wine, etc.).
You can also choose a new “Monuments of Paris.”key ring series : Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre-Dame or Musée d’Orsay… Perfect for everyday use!
So don’t hesitate to preserve the magical memory of your trip with this artisanal object made in France, an authentic testimony and vector of tangible link with the history of Paris!
You can buy these creations on the “Toit de Paris” website or at one of the 3 Parisian resellers (the Eiffel Tower boutique – 5 Av. Anatole France, 75007 Paris / the Musée Carnavalet boutique – 23 Rue de Sévigné, 75003 Paris / the Pavillon de l’Arsenal boutique – 21 Bd Morland, 75004 Paris).

Leather bags by MOYNAT PARIS
Pauline Moynat was one of the kind ! She was the only female trunk maker of her time…
She had left her provincial life at the age of sixteen, emigrated to Paris in search for a job, worked in a small leather-working atelier … And founded the eponymous house in 1849 (along with Octavie & Francois Coulembier). Perfect timing, this was during the height of rail travel and the creation of France’s railway network…!
Maison Moynat became pioneer in luxury (automobile) luggage and was celebrated for its trunk-making savoir-faire.
The brand registered numerous patents and won prestigious awards for their inventions :
1854 – First to use a sturdy waterproof canvas coated with Gutta Percha (a kind of vegetal gum). It guaranteed complete waterproofing for the trunks.
1873 – Moynat trunk (Or English trunk), a wicker trunk with a lightweight structure , covered with a varnished canvas and leather trimming.
1902 – Creation of the Limousine trunk for automobiles with a concave bottom that closely followed the rounded roof of the car.
1928 – The side or lateral sliding trunk
The brand ceased operations in 1976. But luckily, the LVMH group bought back the brand in 2010 and successfully relaunched operations in 2011 !
The spirit and craft of Moynat continues to accompany the modern travelers of today. Iconic products are :
- * the wheel form bag
- * the “Rejane” bag, celebrating the Belle Epoque actress Gabrielle Rejane, a true ambassador of Moynat’s art in the past.
- * the “Oh Tote” bag, celebrating the Moynat Medallion, an Art Deco typographic design which became the signature of the House.
- * the “Flori” bag. The “M” marquetry model is the emblematic craft technique of Moynat Paris.
You can buy the Moynat bags and luggage on the e-shop, in the Parisian boutique, in the main department stores corners…. Or in the shops around the world.

Shoes by JM. WESTON
The JM Weston saga dated back to the year 1891, when Mr Edouard Blanchard founded a shoes factory in the Limoges city. The region was well know for its leather work due to live-stocks activity. 15 years later, his son Eugène Blanchard decided to travel to the USA and learn the american boot-makers’ craft in Weston city (Massachusetts). He imported back the “Goodyear” stitching technique, which allows shoes to be resole in the long term. Innovative, he decided then to only manufacture top of the line shoes and renamed the family business “J.M Weston”.
JM Weston is the only French shoemaker which has its own sole leather tannery since 1981; using traditional vegetable tanning methods, the leather possesses durability and exceptional quality.
Since 1974, the JM Weston brand belongs to the EPI holding, a french familial holding geared towards luxury activities. The brand has now a worldwide reputation, not only for its shoes design but also for its craftsmanship. It offers a particular attention to its customer’s requests and has a tailor-made service. The shoes models are provided in 3 to 7 foot-width for each half size ! More than 180 steps and 6 weeks are necessary to manufacture a JM Weston shoe.
You can buy the JM Weston shoes on the e-shop, in the 7 Parisian boutiques, in the 3 Main departments stores corners….or in the boutiques worldwide.
And remember, the JM Weston brand now offers a vintage service in France & Japan !

Handmade knife from LAGUIOLE city
The traditional LAGUIOLE style knife is born in the Laguiole village area (in the high plateau of Aubrac in the north Aveyron region, south of France).
It was inspired from the spanish knives (Navaja) that the local men used to bring back after working there during the winter time.
Since 1828, cutlers have been handcrafting the traditional knives with the following basic details:
- * an arche line
- * a folding form
- * a 1 to 3-pieces accessories: a blade, with additional corkscrew and/or awl. The corkscrew is linked to the request of the people from Aveyron who left the department to conquer the Parisian coffees. For the awl, it was used in the agricultural sector mainly to pierce the rumen of animals.
- * an engraved symbol (traditionally a bee or a fly but it can be another design).
- * and possibly an engraved metal work along the back of the knife.
In any case, the traditional Laguiole knife is handmade in France, in the workshops located in Laguiole village or surrounding villages. In the Laguiole village itself there are 12 cutlers workshops. Some others are scattered in others villages such as Espalion, Montezic or Estaing. You can visit some of their workshops, boutiques and even a private museum of the Laguiole knife.
It would not be fair not to include also the Thiers city area (200 kms away) as a Laguiole knife manufacture place. Why this ? Because Thiers city is historically the French capital of the cutlery. And when the World War I decimated the men of the Laguiole village and impacted of course the manufacturing process, the Laguiole style knife was still manufactured in this city’s workshops during the following decades…
The trouble is that the Laguiole term is not a protected geographical brand. It became a generic term of a special type of knife. This matter of fact allowed all kind of distorsions, copies of more or less good quality, industrially produced, in France but also abroad (Asia, Pakistan…etc). In 1993, a French business man even registered the Laguiole name as a brand for its own diversified business…This why some of the traditional Laguiole manufacturers joined in a professional union (named Couteau de Laguiole). They are trying to protect the historical cutlery know-how of the Laguiole area by filing a legal request of Protected Geographical Indication (IGP in French). It is under process…
The traditional craft-men of the Laguiole knife also diversified its form and use : you can chose between folding knives, table knives, sommelier knives, artist and designers signatures, art cutlery…You even can choose the handle material, the symbol or metal work, make it engraved with your name… the sky is the limit (and your financial resources 🙂 !).
You can buy a traditional Laguiole knife in the workshops boutiques, on their own e-shops or in dedicated knives retailers. 3 Laguiole workshops also opened dedicated boutiques in Paris : Forge de Laguiole , Laguiole en Aubrac, and Laguiole Village.
And always remember : a traditional Laguiole knife hand made by a French craft-man always has the blade engraved with the workshop name (and the simplest model’s price begins at 90/100 euros). More than 100 steps are necessary to complete a Laguiole handcrafted kife.

Coin collection & jewelry by MONNAIE DE PARIS
The “Monnaie de Paris” was founded in 864 by the French King Charles II. The King’s purpose was to decree the creation of a coining workshop in Paris, attached to the crown. At the time, 8 coin striking workshops were scattered right across the territory.
For several centuries, the number of royal workshops varied. By 1878, only Monnaie de Paris was still in operation. Its current location (Quai de Conti) was decided by the King Louis XV.
In 1958, President Charles de Gaulle relocated the coins factory (industrial minting) in the west of France ( 44 Pessac). The ultra-secured factory not only manufactures the Euro coins used in France but also the coins for more than 40 others countries.
The Parisians premises kept the artistic and the national distinctions’/decorations’ production. It also now hosts the museum dedicated to the coins history.
It is so the France’s longest standing institution and the oldest enterprise in the world !
You can buy coins from various collections : History, Arts, Unesco world places, fictional characters (Astrix, Le Petit Prince, Le Petit Nicolas, Harry Potter..) , commemorative events (Olympics games 2024 !) or characters (Moliere, Jean de La fontaine, Presidents…). Of course, the price depends on the metal used (silver, high relief silver, gold, high relief gold) and the face value of the coin !
A coins range is dedicated to the treasures of Paris.
You can also buy jewelry: birth medals, religious or laic pendants, antic coins jewels.
The coins and medals are available on the e-shop, or in the Parisian museum boutique.
Remind : you can also buy, in the dedicated boxes, the souvenirs medals (2 to 5 euros) of each touristic attractions in Paris and across France !

Household linen by GARNIER-THIEBAUT
The “Garnier-Thiebaut” brand is one of the 3 last jacquard French manufacturers.
Reminder: Jacquard fabric is a textured fabric with complex patterns woven into it, rather than printed, dyed or embroidered on the top. It is the French Joseph-Marie Jacquard, a weaver of the textile Lyon city, who created in 1801 the revolutionary Jacquard loom. The machine uses a series of punch cards, rather than a draw boy, to guide the loom, telling it which threads to raise at which times in order to create a jacquard weave. “Bistanclaque pan ” is the other nickname of the jacquard loom, due to its specific working noise. And by the way, the same punch cards design will inspire early computers and binary code….!
The brand was founded in 1833 in the East of France (Jura mountains) when Virginie Thiébaut married Jean-Baptiste Garnier. They created a weaving company which became successful, and succeeded to go through the turmoils of the French History. In 1985, the brand was sold to the Montclos family, one the the oldest French ” textile” family.
The Garnier-Thiebaut brand sells high quality household linen (damask fabricks) to individuals and hotel professionals. Since 2006, the brand has been awarded by the French EPV label (Living Heritage company) for its historical know-how.
You can make your choice between various style of table-linen, bedding and bath linen.
A special Parisian style range is also available.
The products are available on the e-shop (EU delivery only…), in the Parisian boutique, in the BHV main dpt store corner. And in all their other French shops or factory outlets.

18th century inspiration artcraft by ANTOINETTE POISSON
When 2 heritage restorers re-discovered the “Domino” paper technique ! In the 1700s, the decorative papers were hand-blocked crafted by the Dominotiers (French guild of paper makers). Those papers sheets were used as wallpaper, decorative papers (books covers) or lining boxes….But during the next century, with the new continuous paper roll, the Domino technique slowly disappeared.
Luckily, Vincent Farelly and Jean-Baptiste Martin have been reviving this “savoir-faire” in their Parisian workshop.
They even named their brand with the real name of the Marquise de Pompadour, the King Louis XV’s favorite (she was a lover of art and wallpaper, who lived when the domino papers flourished ).
You will discover handmade decorative objects (stationery, textiles…), domino papers and wallpapers by rolls, even water perfumes (inspired by the 18th century).
The brand “A Paris with Antoinette Poisson” also regularly collaborates with other well-known brands (Nina Ricci, Dyptique, Gucchi, Ladurée, Château de Versailles, La confiture parisienne…etc).
You can buy these products with beautiful ornate designs and timeless patterns on the e-shop, in the Parisian boutique or in Le Bon Marché main department store corner.

Dolls by PETITCOLLIN
In 1860, in the north east of France, Mr Nicolas Petitcollin created a hair accessories workshop. All women had long hairs: so combs and toiletries (in horn, boxwood or ivory) were very famous.
In 1898, the company invested in a new technology : the celluloid, the first plastic material ! After plastic hairs accessories, the first toys … and in 1912, the first plastic doll, replacing the historical and fragile porcelain doll ! Without forgetting the mobile closing eyes’ patent when the baby doll is laid down.
Despite the world wars turmoils, the company became the most important french manufacturer of celluloid toys till the 70′. Its iconic baby doll ,created in 1926, is still manufactured.
The PetitCollin brand now belongs to the VILAC toys group since 1995. It is the last French dolls’ manufacturer. The brand has been awarded by the French EPV Label (Living Heritage Company) for its historical & technical know-how in 2007.

Board Games by DUJARDIN
Some of the traditional french board games are the ‘Mille bornes” game and the ‘Le cochon qui rit “game from the Dujardin company.
The “Mille bornes” (One thousands kms) game was created in 1947 by Edmond Dujardin, a stationary’ publisher for driving schools. He got inspired by the american game “Touring: a car race’s game with cards. The name “Mille bornes” was inspired by the nearly 1000 kms of the “Nationale nr 7″road. It was the famous main road used by French people during their annual holidays migration from Paris to the south (Côte d’Azur). Easy to play, the game became famous and quickly conquered at that time Europe, Canada and United States.
It is still 100% manufactured in France and offers various versions : the classical one (cards only), the beginner one, the luxury or collector versions (with accessories), the green one (electric cars thematic)…etc.
“Le cochon qui rit” (the laughing pig) game is a dice game of chance. The first one to accessorize his plastic pig (with ears, legs, eyes, tail) wins ! The origins of this game are coming from Lyon city. People used to play a “pig” game in pubs (a pig drawing was completed according your dice results). The one who was loosing had to pay for the round. In 1932, Joseph Michel, one of the regular pub consumer, had the idea to create a wood pig sculpture with its accessories. And then the product had been awarded by the Lépine prize in 1934 (annual French inventors competition). Various versions of this game are also available (classic, beginners, collector…etc.)
You can buy these products in every toys retailers shops (La Grande Récré / Jouéclub / King Jouet / Cultura ) and even in toys’ sections of supermarkets !

Story mate by JOYEUSE
When Mathieu Roumens, a father of a 3 years old boy, decided to create a story mate for children! In 2018, his main purpose was to fight the kids’ attraction for the mobile phones’ screens… Each parent knows what we are talking about here 🙂

How does it work ?

Household linen by LE JACQUARD FRANCAIS
“Le Jacquard Français” brand is one of the 3 last jacquard French manufacturers.
The history of Le Jacquard Français Co started in the east of France in 1861. Its historical particularity was to introduce color’s fashion in the classical white household linen, when the company started working in 1978 with the famous stylist Primerose Bordier.
They are very high quality products, 100% made in France. And the traditional know-how of the company had been rewarded in 2010 by the french label EPV (Living Heritage Company).
You will have the choice between table or kitchen linen, bath and beach linen, decoration items…etc. Some especially with beautiful Parisian themes.
Le Jacquard Français was also selected for a collaboration with the Elysée (French Presidence) !
Just make your choice ! You can buy Le Jacquard Français products: on the e-shop, in the 3 Parisian boutiques, in retailers shops or in main departments stores corners.

Braided shopping bag by FILT1860
We already know that one of the correct behavior for environmental protection is to avoid the use of disposable bags.
And that is why some of our grandparents tips or useful products became the new trend !
I am especially talking about the braided shopping bag… the one that all the housewives had been using till the 70′.
Yes, the same one that had been supplanted by disposable plastic bag ….But it is payback time !
The Filt1860 company was funded in 1860 in Normandy (Caen city) by peasants : they used to braid their own crops bags or nets.
160 years later, the company is still there ! They are specialized in braiding synthetic or natural fiber nets for food, sports, aviary, leisure, baby carrier mesh wraps, candle wicks…etc. In 2017, Filt1860 was awarded with the french EPV label (Living Heritage Company) for its traditional know-how.
And Jean-Philippe and Catherine Cousin (new owners since 2006) had the excellent idea to bring up to date the provision net product.
It became a useful and trendy product, full of colors, with even great success outside France !
Evidence of this is their collaboration with the well-known bags brand Longchamp in 2020…!
You can buy the Filt1860 nets on the e-shop or in retailers boutiques (such as Le Bon Marché main department store, or Altermundi network shops).

Embroidered brooch by MACON & LESQUOY
For once, we will talk about products designed in France …but made worldwide ! 🙂
In 2009, the designers Marie Macon and Anne-Laure Lesquoy created a brand offering hand embroidered accessories. Marie sketches the ideas whereas Anne-Laure manages the conceptualisation of the item.
The funny, colorful and even engaged brooches, patches and other accessories are mainly inspired by their trips abroad. But also through collaborations with well-known French brands or museums.
They selected highly skilled craftsmen around the globe : Pakistan for its ancestral hand-skills with purl embroidery of the brooches, Portugal for the patches mechanical embroidery and Rwanda for the needle-painting technique.
Macon & Lesquoy had also the great idea to celebrate the Spirit of the Paris city, by creating a dedicated theme: cheese, croissant, baquette, wine, cup of café, pigeon, bistrot chair, Eiffel Tower, Street sign….It will be difficult not to start a collection ! Perfect Parisian souvenirs, isn’t it ?

Paris city skyline by THE LINE
When a magic moment in a lifetime led to a nice business adventure…!
In 2015, Antoine Daniel was lucky enough to watch a beautiful scene from a small boat : the rising of the sun on the Marseille city, in the south of France. The light contrast was so clear that you could see very precisely the skyline of the city ! He quickly had the idea to replicate this simple line as a laser cut metallic interior decoration accessory.
Then he replicated the idea to other cities, in France and worldwide.
But also to the mountains views and the music sound.
2 sizes (19 or 50cms, but also till 125 cms for the summit skylines), black or gold color.
No doubt that the Paris skyline is the perfect souvenir !
You can buy these skylines on The Line e-shop, in museums shops, Main departments stores or in retailers boutiques.

Perfumes & cosmetics by OFFICINE UNIVERSELLE BULY 1803
Iconic perfumer of the XIX century, Jean-Vincent Bully opened a perfumes and cosmetics boutique in Paris in 1803. He invented the famous “Bully aromatic vinegar” (fashionable anti-mephitic vinegar of those times…). But he went through bankruptcy when the 1830 Revolution destroyed his shop. He spent the rest of his life paying off creditors and in deprivation.
His life inspired the French author Balzac for the novel untitled César Birotteau !
In 2014, the Victoire de Taillac and Ramdane Touhami couple brought up to date the brand, renamed “Officine Universelle Buly 1803” (Buly with one l now). And lately in 2021, the French luxury group LVMH became the sole owner of this business.
The brand’s aim is to offer high-end beauty care products, perfumes (water-based) and home fragrances. They are based on this particular historical inheritance but also on universal beauty routine recipes. Reformulated and free of harmful chemicals, the products are presented in a refined XIX century style packaging. They are 100% made in France excepting for the accessories ( combs, tooth -face-body brushes, sponges, etc…) which are selected worldwide.
For the perfumes range, Buly 1803 has the great idea to collaborate with the Louvre Museum : 8 major perfumes makers were given total freedom in creating the olfactive signature of the Museum masterpiece of their choice ! Amazing idea, isn’t it ?
Over the years, Buly 1803 became a successful brand sold in beautiful boutiques all over the world, which offers a stylish shopping experience. Just try it !

Blackcurrant (cassis) liquor from DIJON City.
What about testing one of the most famous french apéritif ? A mix of blackcurrant liquor with a Bourgogne Aligoté white wine … the famous “Kir” !
The blackcurrant berry (“cassis” in french) originally comes from cold countries ( Scandinavia, Tibet, Siberia…). Implanted in France during the XVI century, the blackcurrant leaves were infused for medicinal purposes.
But in 1841, in the Dijon city (Burgundy area), Mr Auguste-Denis Lagoute created a new recipe: the first blackcurrant liquor. With the help of his son-in-law, Mr Henri Lejay, this creamy product with strong aroma became successful.
The mix of simple white wine with this liquor was named “blanc-cassis”.
The current “Kir” formula only dates back to the years 50′: when the priest Félix Kir – mayor of the Dijon city- agreed to give his name to his favorite aperitif (a mix of liquor (1/5) with Bourgogne Aligoté white wine only (4/5)).
Since 2013, the “Crème de cassis de Dijon” is protected by a Geographical Indication label. Its production must follow strict specifications such as : production within Dijon township only / french blackcurrant only / macerating blackcurrant berries in alcohol / at least 200 g blackcurrant berries per liter of finished product / minimum 15 % degree of alcohol / minimum 25% blackcurrant berries of the “Noir de Bourgogne” variety).
Only 4 Dijon liquor makers meet these production requirements: Maison Briottet – Gabriel Boudier – Lejay Lagoute – L’Héritier Guyot.
NB: Only the Maison Briottet remained a family business since 1836. It was initially a wine trader house.
When buying a “Crème de cassis de Dijon” bottle, you can be sure to buy a traditional high-quality product.
You can buy this product in wine stores (e.g: Le repaire de bacchus or Nicolas) or in wine section of super-markets.
Nowadays, there are many variantes of this aperitif : with champagne (Kir Royal), with red whine (Communard or Cardinal), with cider (Kir breton)…etc. And you can also use other fruits liquors (peach or various berries instead of the blackcurrant one). In that case, it must not be named “Kir” but “blanc + fruit liquor name”.
Enjoy your french aperitif !

Liquors by NOYAU DE POISSY Distillery
The NOYAU DE POISSY Distillery, established in 1698, is the last historical distillery in the Paris region.
The Seine Valley has long been renowned for its sunny slopes planted with numerous apricot, sloe and cherry orchards. The kernels of these fruits all have highly aromatic qualities. The idea of macerating them in locally-produced fruit and wine brandies must have evolved fairly early on. These first liqueurs, known as ratafia, were extremely popular for a long time.
The first two liqueurs : “Gobelet d’Argent” and “Sceau de Saint-Louis”, are made using apricot kernels that are macerated or distilled in a superior quality spirit. Depending on the recipe, a fine brandy may be added, then the liqueurs are flavoured with plants.
The third liqueur “Liqueur de Paris” is made from the stone of a little wild berry : la prunelle. The stones are first macerating with neutral beet’s alcohol, then are distilled in a small traditional pot still. The distillate is then blended with other secret ingrédients in the final recipe which is slightly flavored and well balanced. It has a wonderful flavor of sweet almond, elegant with notes of wild berries. In 2013, it has been awarded by the Gold Medal of the Annual Agricultural Fair in Paris.
Let’s test it ! You can buy these liquors in traditional liquors boutiques (such as Nicolas wine shops for example)
Remind : Excessive alcohol drinking is a health hazard, drink with moderation !

Rubber boots by AIGLE
The adventure started in Paris, in 1853. An american business man, Mr Hiram Hutchinson (1), bought the rubber vulcanization licence to Mr Charles Goodyear(2).
In the process, Mr Hutchinson started up a company (La Compagnie du Caoutchouc Souple) and established a factory in the Loiret region.
One aim for all of this : to manufacture rubber shoes for the European rural population. In reference to the USA emblem, the shoes brand was named “à l’aigle ” (the eagle)… The flexible and waterproof rubber boot was born !
In the following years, the company diversified its rubber production (tents, carpets..). And became renowned in Europe, Turkey and even Australia.
In 1967, the factory relocated in the Vienne department (86). It was the most modern shoes factory in Europe !
AIGLE also started to sell more elegant and shiny rubber boots for city women. And created their legendary models such as: the blue boot with 2 white straps for sailors, the Ecuyer riding boot, the tennis shoes…
After various economical twists along the years, the company now belongs to the Swiss group Maus Frères holding (owner of the brands Lacoste/Gant/The Koople , among others…). The AIGLE brand is leader on his market in France and also meets great success in Asia.
Nowadays, only the traditional boots models (the most expensive and the classical children boot models LOLLY POP) are manufactured in this historical workshop. Around 200 master rubber craftmen hand make almost 4,000 pairs of boots every day. 2 kgs of rubber and a 60 steps production are needed for 1 pair of boot !
All the other products (clothes, shoes) are manufactured abroad.
Just make your choice among the many boots ranges: gardening, sea-side, urban, country and hunting, fur boots, professionals….
By the way…in 2021,”The Elysée boot” limited edition was made in collaboration with the Presidency of the French Republic….such a nice Parisian gift isn’t it ?
You can buy the AIGLE boots on the e-shop, in the 5 Parisian boutiques, in the 4 corners in Main department stores, or in the shops located abroad (mainly Asia).

French béret by LAULHERE
The “béret” is the iconic hat symbol of France. It has been used since the XV century in the south of the Pau city (Bearn region, part of the Pyrénées montains). The shepherds made these hats with their sheep wool as a protection against the rain and bitter winters.
It became popular and was adopted by the army. Since the years 1930, it even became a fashion accessory for the movie stars.
In 1792 in the same region, Mr Pierre Laulhère founded his business (manufacture of Wood stocking). And in 1840 his son, Lucien Laulhière, started manufacturing “béret” !
In 1992, suffering economic hardship, the company was taken over by Mrs Rosabelle Forzy.
Since then, Laulhère became again a successful brand and sales its “berets” to Haute Couture designers, worldwide armies and regular customers. At least 15 workers and 2 days of work are necessary to manufacture a Laulhère béret.
Maison Laulhère offers a wide range of “bérets” and caps: with classic or modern styles, various colors, in merinos wool or leather, with all sizes (children size included) !
By the way, did you know that the Che Guevara’s béret was a Laulhère one ?
You can buy your béret on the Laulhère e-shop, in the 2 Parisian boutiques or in retailers’shops.

Opéra inspired candles by UN SOIR A L’OPERA
The brand “Un soir à l’Opéra” (a night at the Opéra) was of course created by an Opera aficionado !
In her youth, the franco-russian Katia Gortchakoff used to slip in the Opera de Paris and attend the shows where her mother performed as a Mezzo singer.
Katia’s candles are the olfactives memories of those times and places. You can bring back home a piece of one Opera’s atmosphere.
These candles are made with a 100% vegetable wax and the fragrances are created by French master perfumers.
The company also created personalized candles for major institutions ( Eiffel Tower company, La Comédie Française, UNESCO, The French Decorative art Museum).
Thus, this is a refined and original gift that you can buy on the e-shop or in retailers’ boutiques.

Perfumes by ORIZA L. LEGRAND
Who would have guess that a brand founded in 1720 would still be there nowadays in Paris ?
Fargeon The Elder was the perfumer and distiller of the Royal Court in Versailles during the Louis XV’ reign.
He founded La Maison Oriza: the name was refering to the “Oriza Stavisa” rice species which was included in his beauty creams & powders….
Only God knows how La Maison Oriza survived through the historical turmoils… but the Fargeon House was famous for being the French Royal court perfumer (Queen Marie Antoinette, Emperor Napoleon Ier, Empress Joséphine, Emperor Napoleon III..). And later the provider of largest foreign courts (Russia, Italy, Ingland)…no less!
The different owners (1811- Mr Louis Legrand / 1860 – Mr Antonin Raynaud…) were successful and pioneers. Very first perfume steam plant (1860) and first perfume in solid form (1887). Perfumes bottles made by the famous crystal-maker Baccarat, prestigious boutiques in Paris… Participation in French and overseas fairs ( first prize in the 1900 Paris World Fair..)
Then, the World War I and the Great Depression weakened the House which fell into oblivion… (production stopped in 1940)!
But in 2012, Mr Hugo Lambert & Mr Franck Belaiche-Bonniot revived the brand. They reformulated the historical perfumes with utter respect.
A wide range of high quality products is now available : perfumes (eau de parfum versions only & colognes), skin care, soaps, bath salts and home fragrances.
You can buy them in the 2 Oriza. L. Legrand parisian boutiques or on the e-shop (worldwide delivery).

With luxury know-how and high quality products, its reputation flourished. The Maison Trudon became the Versailles royal court supplier.
In 1737, Maison Trudon even bought the one and only Royal Wax Manufacture (created in 1702 in the south of Paris). Its moto has not changed since : “DEO REGIQUE LABORANT”, which means “they (the bees) work for God and the King”
Somehow Maison Trudon succeeded in going through the up and down of the history ! And continued serving the Imperial court of Napoleon 1st … The Emperor even gave his newborn son a pillar candle adorned with 3 gold profile medallions.
The hand-made candles are manufactured in the work-shop in Normandy. Classical (in green-glass or alabaster jar), pillars or tapers candles, wax busts of famous French figures (Napoleon, Marie Antoinette…), the choice is yours.!
Maison Trudon even manufactures home fragrances and a range of perfumes.
You can buy their products on their e-shop, in their 2 Parisian boutiques or at their corners located in Le Bon Marché and Printemps Haussmann Department stores.

Wood toys, games & puzzles by JANOD
Created in 1970 in the Jura mountains area (east of France) by Louis Janod, the brand was initially dedicated to local wood toys and games.
It is well-known for toddlers toys and pretend plays, but JANOD also diversified its ranges: cardboard puzzles, games, outdoor accessories, arts & craft boxes.
The JANOD products met success in France and abroad. But the consequence is that only 35 % of the products are 100% manufactured in France ( remaining part comes from East Europe and Asia).
One of their best sellers products is the magnetic wood puzzle (France, Europe or World map).
For another french touch, some of their puzzles have a Parisian theme (these ones are Made in France) : nice gift idea, isn’t it ?
You can buy the JANOD products on the e-shop (France, Belgium & Spain delivery only) or in retailers shops such as (La Grande Récré, Le Bonhomme de bois…).

ELYSEE souvenirs
What about participating in the renovation of the “Elysée” ?
Reminder: “L’Elysée” is the french Presidential Palace located in Paris…
This historical monument is already 300 years old and needs a lifting !!!
The President Macron Administration had a good idea; the creation of an official “Elysée” brand store with 100% Made in France gifts.
Products had been designed and manufactured in collaboration with well known french brands.
And all the shop’s profits will be used toward the restoration projects.
No doubt you will find a labeled souvenir according to your taste among the home decoration, fashion, accessories, stationary ranges……
My favorites souvenirs ? the very chic silver cufflinks or set of pétanque balls, both labelled FR (French Republic)/ the child apron with “La Marseillaise” french anthem / and the capsule T-shirt collections reminding the old-fashion french expressions used by our President !
You can buy these gifts on the Elysée e-shop or in the Elysée corner located in the Galeries Lafayette Haussman Department store (6 th floor) or in Galeries Lafayette Maison (1st floor). NB : no Boutique is existing inside the Elysée Palace.

Snap cardigan by AGNES B.
In 1979, the young fashion designer Agnès B. (Bourgois) created what would turn out to be a iconic cloth: the snap cardigan !
The duffel cardigan was inspired by the classic cardigan she used to wear on her way to school. Years later, she imagined an easy way to open and close her everyday sweatshirts.
The line of very closed snap buttons was inspired by the clothes of the Renaissance period.
Agnès B. had not stopped since to modify the form of her fashion myth. 40 models (short sleeves, V collar or stand-up collar, with a wood, full dress version…etc), 148 colors, various materials (cotton, leather or cashmere), the variations were endless……! Children and men started to use it also.
And yes, this fashion myth is still manufactured in France (Troyes city) !
You can buy your original snap cardigan on Agnes B. e-shop, in her boutiques in Paris (and abroad) or in Agnes B. corners in the main parisian department stores.

Household linens by Tissage MOUTET
Since 1919, the weaver Tissage MOUTET has been manufacturing weaving Basque and jacquard household linens of high quality, in the Béarn region (south west of France).
Initially, the Basque weaving is inspired by the cattle blanket (named ‘saïal’), a strong white cloth which protected animals from the sun and insects. Its 7 stripes design (often green and red) symbolized the seven Basque provinces. It was made in flax, this plant being widely cultivated in this region. It was then only a short step from using the cattle blanket material for the clothes and household linens…!
The tea-towels, (cocktail) napkins, tablecloths, apron and other kitchen linens accessories are now very creative and colorful.
Some of their linens have a design dedicated to Paris !
This 5 generations work received the label “Atelier d’Art de France” (French professional fine craft federation) the label “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (Living Heritage Company). It also benefits with a “Protected Geographical Indication” (IGP) of Basque linen (Pyrénées Atlantiques county).
You can find these products on the eshop or through retailers network (in the Parisian “Bring France Home” souvenir shop in particular).

Marseille soap
Have you ever heard about the Marseille soap ? A traditional soap made in the Marseille city area, in the south of France ?
Nearly all French households have used it at least once ! It can be used for home, laundry and body cares !
The story of the soap goes back as far as the Mesopotamian times (2800 B.C). In the VIII century, the Alep soap’s recipe started spreading around the Mediterranean sea. Of course, it arrived in the south of the France. The Massalia city (Massilia during the Roman times and Marseille city now) was initially a Greek Colony and a major trading port. It was the perfect place for the soap activity to implement. The recipe’s main ingredients were easy to find in this area : the oil (extracted from the olive harvested), the natural ash (derived of plants grown in saline environnement), the salt. The city climate (hot weather and strong wind) was also perfect for drying the soaps.
The soap activity had thus been expanding there, from the Middle Age (XII century) to the early XX century (with nearly 100 soap work-shops in the area). The Marseille heavy bars of soap became famous and were sold in Europe and in the Mediterranean region.
Through times, production process had been also regulated. In 1688, Colbert (Minister of Louis the XIV) regulated the manufacture and the ingredients. In 1812, Napoleon established a trademark logo and specifications (soap manufactured in the Marseille city area only…).
But with the 2 World Wars and the competition of the synthetic detergents, the Marseille soap industry suffered a sharp decline.
Luckily, since the 1980s there is a revival of the Marseille soap ! Thanks to the consumer demand for natural, authentic and French products !
3 criteria define the most traditional manufacture of Marseille soap:
1/ the soap composition : 4 ingredients only! Vegetable oils (72% at least), ash, sea-salt and water…no perfumes, dyes, preservatives
2/ the geographical origin : Marseille city and/or the Bouches du Rhône department (13) only
3/the manufacturing process in 5 steps (NB: Oil and ash are cooked in a cauldron)
In 2011, four manufacturers gathered together under a professional guild (the “Union des Professionnels du Savon de Marseille (UPSM)”). They intend to preserve the quality and the manufacturing process of the traditional Marseille soap.
- The Marius Fabre brand (e-shop in UK, retailers shops in Paris + the Marius Fabre boutique,26 rue de Turenne, 75003 Paris).
- The Savonnerie du Midi brand (e-shop in UK)
- The Savonnerie Fer à Cheval Brand (e-shop in UK, retailers shops in Paris available)
- The Savonnerie Le Sérail (e-shop in French only)
They are also waiting for a draft legislation from the French government to define a Geographical Indication (GI) for their soap.
These four companies already benefit with the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV)/ Living Heritage Label)”. It is awarded by the French Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Employment, for the excellence of the traditional and industrial skills.
No doubt, this is a perfect true French gift !
